“How does an employment agency make its money?”

It’s an awkward question for sure – one that many of our temporary employees really want to know the answer to, but are too polite to ask.

So who does?

Our clients pay us for the work we do. Employers throughout central and southern Pennsylvania rely on Berks & Beyond to help them find great people like you for assignments, project work and direct positions.

In a nutshell, we provide great workers for them more quickly and cost-effectively than they could on their own. We take on activities such as recruiting, screening and interviewing for our clients. They, in turn, are free to focus on other important business priorities. And, of course, you get access to lots of employment opportunities, many of which are never advertised.

It’s a win-win-win scenario!

How does our employment agency make money?

Another great question. There are two primary ways we get paid:

  1. Temporary and contract placement. For temporaries and contract workers, our clients pay by the hour. The rate we charge includes pay for the contingent worker (i.e., you), plus an additional charge for our services (as well as other employer expenses like taxes and insurance).
  2. Direct placement. For direct hires (i.e., “permanent” positions), clients pay us a one-time fee only if they hire a candidate we refer.

Who determines the pay rates for temporary assignments and direct jobs?

Most of the time, our clients set pay rates.

There’s a common misconception within our industry that a staffing firm will pay a temporary employee less, so that they can make more money. With Berks & Beyond, this couldn’t be further from the truth!

We stay on top of pay rates for positions throughout the markets we serve, and we know that we can attract higher quality workers for our clients’ jobs when the pay rates are higher than competitors’. So, we counsel our clients to offer temporary employees and direct candidates wages that are at or above market rate. The higher the hourly wage, the more attractive the assignment is. That winds up being good for everybody!
